Human-Centric Lighting

Human-Centric Lighting

Businesses looking to invest in intelligent lighting for their work spaces will find a wealth of products at their fingertips. Climate change has accelerated innovation in lighting control, as has the recent ban on T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps. The results are not only impressive but game-changing in terms of energy savings. Comprehensive networking of all lighting controls in a building delivers a remarkable reduction in energy consumption that cannot be matched by alternative approaches such as switching to LEDs alone.

Research has shown that while energy-efficient luminaires certainly help reduce the impact of lighting, there comes a point where the plateau in energy savings and rising lumens per watt is no longer enough. A sensor-based intelligent lighting control system that can switch lights on and off or dim them pushes efficiency beyond that point by cutting consumption. For businesses, taking advantage of the energy savings offered by intelligent lighting systems is therefore not just beneficial but essential.

Human-centric lighting

When weighing the benefits of automated lighting systems for their premises, facility managers usually point to convenience and cost savings. Yet these systems can also have an additional positive impact on well-being and productivity, since automation provides a valuable opportunity to adapt lighting to the circadian rhythms of staff.

The circadian rhythm is our 24-hour biological clock, which regulates natural cycles of activity and rest by controlling hormone levels. People are known to be strongly affected by changes in natural light throughout the day. The human-centric lighting concept uses intelligent, controllable LED lighting systems to mimic the characteristics of natural daylight, combining the visual and non-visual biological effects of light through changes in color temperature and illumination levels.

Artificial light synchronized with our circadian rhythms has been proven to make us happier, healthier and more productive. It has been scientifically demonstrated that spaces using human-centric lighting systems improve staff well-being, concentration and productivity during the day, enhance sleep quality at night and help reduce sickness rates. An automated lighting control system will therefore not only illuminate an office space but also support the well-being of everyone in it.
