A distinctive challenge in building an automated supervisory control and management system for an airport is the considerable distance between technical rooms and engineering equipment, and between them and the technical services. One of the main tasks is therefore to make the most efficient use of the existing information infrastructure for data exchange. Engineering equipment such as transformer substations, pumping stations, boiler houses and the like is fitted with local automation that keeps the engineering systems fully operational.
All local automation is combined into a single network via the facility's TCP/IP-based local area network. In locations without wired communications, and for mobile engineering equipment, network connectivity is provided over radio channels. Where setting up radio channels proves difficult, data is transmitted via GSM.
As a result, all data from the facility's engineering systems flows to a single server for further processing and storage.
In addition, maintenance staff have remote access to all engineering systems from any building on the airport grounds, both for real-time monitoring and for controlling the operation of the engineering equipment.
